BOWLING will be on the cards at the weekend in a bid to raise money for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
A committee set up by several league bowlers called Wigan 10 Pin Causes has organised a 24-hour bowling marathon in a bid to knock over a quarter of a million pins in 24 hours and raise as much money as possible for charity.
The event is being held at AMF Bowling Wigan from 10pm on Saturday 26th September until 10pm on Sunday and will serve as a practice for the League Bowlers who hope to set a Guinness World Record next year for the most pins knocked over in a 24 hour period.
Paul Smith, Chair of the committee, said: “The 24 hour bowl itself is only open to League Bowlers (due to the need of a high pin fall account to apply for a world record attempt next year) but the general public are encouraged to pay and play on the day to help with the fund raising ,as the proceeds are to be donated to Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
“Entertainment will be provided all through the weekend, including live bands, Wii challenge, face painters, pro ball try outs, raffles and bowling competitions for all ages.
“The bowlers are collecting sponsorships and loads of activities will be available over the 24 hours to raise money for Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
“The charity was chosen because of the fantastic work they do in giving comfort to the terminally ill.
“The hospice’s work was highlighted when three of the Wigan Bowling League’s players were diagnosed with cancer and used these exceptional facilities.
“Mike, Alan and Sheila, will always be remembered in the Bowling fraternity and hopefully this event will be a fitting memorial to them.”
Over the 24 Hours there will be a 24 hour bar and food facility along with lots of activities and entertainment on the Sunday afternoon through till the evening.
Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell, Warriors manager Shaun Wane and members of their team (subject to training) will be coming along on Sunday afternoon.
Miss Wigan, Miss Wigan junior, the Mayor and other dignitaries will be opening the event with a ‘first bowl’ at around 8pm on the Saturday before the 24 hour bowlers start at 10pm.
Paul said: “All are welcome to come down to watch and maybe to have a bowl themselves, where loads of offers, giveaways, entertainment for both kids and adults will keep you amused.
“There will be a live band from 8.30pm playing covers from popular artists over the last few decades, and hopefully getting you up to dance.”
Accredited coaches will be available to give a lesson or two and offer advice to anyone who has questions about joining the bowling clubs.
DJ Stevo will be the man on the mic all day, running games and challenges for prizes and
taking your requests for music when the bands aren’t playing!!
“There is an opportunity to buy raffle tickets where prizes include a UHD TV, £100 of Tesco food vouchers, HP Tablet, nexus 7 tablet, Childs BMX bike, £150 in vouchers to spend at the bowling shop plus many many more great prizes. You can buy the raffle tickets ahead of the event by purchasing them at the AMF bowl in Wigan.
Paul added: “Many thanks have to be given to AMF Bowling, JPSE Media, Shawn’s Autos, Maclaughlin’s Kitchens, Wigan Warriors, Wigan Athletic, JP Whitter, Maysons Food, Shoo Photography, Bowling World 2000, plus too many more to mentions and of course to the committee for all your hard work and commitment, the first of many more to come.”
